Marketype Overview: You do it all; drop you into the war zone and you’ll figure it out. You dabble in an array of channels based on business needs, and you’ve become a jack-of-all trades.
Marketype Strengths: Swiss Army Knives can get almost any marketing task done effectively. A self-starter, someone who can teach themselves how a channel or tactic works with just a little guidance, and report back success or learnings.
Marketype Blindspots: As a generalist, the Swiss Army Knife doesn’t have deep expertise in any one channel. While they can be effective at blocking-and-tackling marketing tasks and project management, creativity and marketing innovation are limited due to lack of deeper expertise. Monitor their bandwidth, as their penchant for diversity can cause them to take on too many projects and be underwater before they realize it.

Marketype Overview: You’ve been in a single marketing channel or discipline for 10,000 hours, you know all the best practices, latest trends, and you’re constantly innovating.
Marketype Strengths: Olympians have deep expertise in one or a few related marketing channels or disciplines - the subject-matter expert who can execute faster and better than anyone else on the team. They love testing, learning, landscape changes, and innovation.
Marketype Blindspots: As a left-brained specialist, Olympians know they’re executing at a high level, and they’ll grow bored or uninspired if they feel handcuffed by red tape, declining budgets, or lack of business alignment. When that happens, they’re usually first to update their resumes.
Marketype Overview: You have great instincts and lots of creativity, so when ideas come, you jump into action. Point, shoot, aim - and your results typically speak for themselves.
Marketype Strengths: Gunslingers are highly proficient, with more Complement skills than Olympians, and more Core skills than Swiss Army Knives. Their diverse experience is valuable to the team, and they make ideal partners for Big Picture Planners in strategy design.
Marketype Blindspots: As a right-brained specialist, the Gunslinger’s broad knowledge sometimes can give them a feeling of ‘intuition’ - their gut tells them what the approach should be, what will work, what won’t, and they don’t sweat the details. This can result in a lack of Collaborate skills, and their shoot-from-the-hip style can result in confusion among the team.
Marketype Overview: Your ideal workday = spreadsheets and data visualization tools. You love diving into the data, pulling out those magical insights, and helping your team market smarter.
Marketype Strengths: Data Nerds are great at analysis, and the more experienced ones are also great at extracting insights. Give them lots of raw data and enough business context, and watch the returns start to compound. Their logical thinking also makes for great SOP designers.
Marketype Blindspots: Sometimes Data Nerds can miss the big picture and lose the business context or insight narrative. Data Nerds may need guidance on the business side of the data in order to know how their data’s story will be received...or misinterpreted.
Marketype Overview: You’re a tester, a tinkerer, someone who moves fast and breaks things. You love marketing technology, optimize relentlessly, and to you “done is better than perfect.”
Marketype Strengths: Growth Hackers can think strategically, execute tactically, and are very data-driven. Through marketing technology, Growth Hackers can help small- and medium-sized businesses grow quickly, and in large companies, if used correctly, they can push the boundaries of optimization and innovation.
Marketype Blindspots: As a left-brain generalist, Growth Hackers may have a similar blindspot to the Data Nerd in that they may lose business context or not grasp priorities. A mastery of martech may also result in a lack of Collaborate skills, as they leave team members in the dust.
Marketype Overview: You work cross-functionally to strategically design marketing plans, project roadmaps, campaign timelines, and put SOPs in place for your marketing team.
Marketype Strengths: Big Picture Planners know how the pieces fit together and can align marketing strategies cross-functionally that help the business move forward. They’re usually great at creative thinking, facilitation, synthesizing, and team collaboration.
Marketype Blindspots: Naturally, their 30,000 foot-view makes it a little harder for Big Picture Planners to have the “rubber hit the road” and execute. They need to make a conscious effort on turning plans into actions and communicating their strategies clearly and frequently. Big Picture Planners can also lack Collaborate skills, taking business inputs back into their ‘lab’ and returning with a beautiful strategy or roadmap that no one on the team has bought into.
