Leveling up for modern marketers is hard. The marketing field is ever-changing, with new channels emerging and best practices constantly changing.

And for marketers who aspire to a bigger role with more responsibility, or for marketers who simply want to stay competitive in the market, skillbuilding is a critical activity in the background of the ‘real work.’

But depending on your career goals, it can be tricky to identify which skills are more important, which are more urgent than others, and hold yourself accountable to gaining certain skills and certifications by specific dates.

That’s why we created this amazing new marketing careers tool…

The T-Shaped Marketer’s Skillbuilding Tracker

Use the first two columns of the sheet to identify Core Skills and Support Skills.

Core Skills are those that are critical for your specialty or channel-focus, whether you’re a paid social coordinator, search specialist, email strategist, brand associate, or marketing generalist.

Support Skills are those that compliment your specialty. If you’re a paid social coordinator, understanding how influencer marketing and display advertising may be Support Skills to consider. If you’re a content marketer, understanding web analytics and community management may be good Support Skills to pursue.

From there, prioritize.

Which skills can you gain in 3 weeks? Which skills can you gain in 3 months?

Breaking it down into a binary will help you focus on what needs to happen now, and what you need to plan for later.

Then add in the dates that you’ll acquire those Core and Support Skills. For bonus points, put reminders on your calendar to hold yourself accountable!

Last, do any of these skills have an industry-accepted validation or certification?

If you’re a web analytics specialist, this may be a Google Analytics Certification.

If you’re a product marketing manager, this may be a Pragmatic Marketing Certification.

Include the link to the validation you want to pursue, and set a date where you’ll attain it.
